So i wanted to show you how it turned out, and also share the whitewash stain formula that i ended up using. But, red oak is more porous and will soak in twice as much stain than white oak.

We recommend using a 120 grit for the final buff before staining. Golden oak 112, expresso 173, true black 199, provincial 111, special walnut 124, golden pecan 145, colonial maple 140. So if you end up sanding the wood a lot, you could reveal red by removing too much of the bleached layer.

After sanding the floors, bleach them twice with klean strip wood bleach (not clorox, and make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle).

They have been reproduced using digital production techniques. And i’d love to achieve more of a white oak color. What kind of wood were your floors?

Our home is from the 1950’s. With minwax® wood stains, there’s a color to suit every style. That allows the stain to fully dry.

Thanks for giving those of us with red oak floors a great idea. Updates have been done over the years. Always test stain on a hidden area of the wood to verify desired colour.

My whitewashed red oak floor isn’t finished yet, but we did get the most important (and definitely the most difficult) step finished yesterday — the actual whitewashing of the wood floor. How to stain red oak to look like white oak. Little did i know pine (the ceiling) stains differently than red oak (floors) and differently than our cedar corbels.

We have red oaks we want to refinish. Tones down the pink from the red oak and didnt add any golden. For some reason, i expected it to be a closer race between the two options, but whitewash ran away with the vote.
